‘Emirates of Good’: Yemenis are grateful for Emirati support to their country
The announcement by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of a $325 million recovery and rehabilitation project in Yemen reflects the ongoing efforts of the international community to support the Yemeni people in the face of a protracted humanitarian crisis. The conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014, has had devastating consequences for the country's infrastructure, health care system, and economy, and has resulted in widespread displacement and suffering for millions of Yemenis.
The UAE's focus on health care, renewable energy, and agriculture sectors, including a dam project for irrigation, suggests a long-term commitment to supporting the development and stability of Yemen. However, the UAE's statement about preventing the Houthi terrorist group from taking control of the money and looting it highlights the continued challenges of delivering aid and support in a complex and volatile conflict environment.
Despite these challenges, the UAE's announcement is a positive development and underscores the importance of sustained international support for Yemen's recovery and rehabilitation.
It's heartening to hear that Yemeni activists are expressing gratitude for the UAE's support through the "Thank you, Emirates of Good" hashtag on Twitter. It seems that the UAE's efforts to provide generators and fuel donations to Aden's capital, as well as the arrival of solar power equipment in Aden, have been particularly helpful in providing much-needed stability and breaking the cycle of corruption involving leased power and diesel purchases. It's also encouraging to know that the UAE has sent a floating station to illuminate southern cities that have been denied diesel fuel and sanctioned by the Houthi militia. It's clear that the people of Yemen are facing immense challenges, and it's heartening to see countries and individuals coming together to support them during this difficult time.
