Oulu and Trenčín Officially Launch as European Capitals of Culture 2026

.Finland’s Oulu and Slovakia’s Trenčín have formally begun their tenure as European Capitals of Culture 2026, ushering in a year dedicated to creativity, sustainability, and cultural cohesion across Europe.

Oulu marked the opening with a grand festival held from January 16 to 18, transforming the city center into a winter wonderland of art, music, theatre, and immersive exhibitions. Central to Oulu’s vision is its ambitious “Cultural Climate Change” program, which includes more than 500 events across themes such as Brave Hinterland, Cool Contrasts, and Wild City. Installations like the Climate Clock emphasize the role of culture in addressing global climate challenges.

Trenčín will follow with its official celebrations from February 13 to 15, under the banner “Awakening Curiosity.” The program connects past and future, city and nature, reflecting Trenčín’s commitment to storytelling, heritage preservation, and innovation. Cultural spaces across the city will host performances, exhibitions, and participatory events designed to re-engage citizens with their urban and natural environment.

Both cities were selected in 2022 and share common goals: regenerating urban areas, strengthening tourism, and reinforcing EU cohesion through culture. Their designation follows the 2025 Capitals of Culture Chemnitz (Germany) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia), continuing Europe’s rotating celebration of diversity and creativity.

As 2026 unfolds, Oulu and Trenčín stand as cultural ambassadors—demonstrating how art and culture can shape resilient, inclusive, and future-ready European cities.
