Zohran Mamdani Wins Election, Becomes NYC’s First Muslim Mayor

In a historic outcome, 34-year-old state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. His campaign focused on affordability, public transit, housing and tax fairness, resonating strongly with New Yorkers across boroughs.

Mamdani becomes the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest mayor in more than a century. His victory marks a significant shift in New York politics — from establishment figures to a grassroots, progressive movement.

He will take office on January 1, 2026, facing the challenge of turning ambitious promises into actionable change in one of the world’s most complex cities.
