Dakar to Dubai – Trade Growth and Strategic Momentum

The dramatic increase in Senegal’s imports from the UAE — growing from $174 million in 2019 to $668.5 million in 2023 — is more than just a statistical milestone. It reflects a strategic partnership between Dakar and Dubai that goes beyond numbers.

Hydrocarbons account for a large share of imports, underscoring Senegal’s energy needs, while machinery and equipment highlight the country’s focus on infrastructure expansion. With major projects underway in transport, energy, and manufacturing, the UAE has emerged as a vital partner in supplying what Senegal needs most.

This momentum comes at a critical time, as African economies seek diversified partners outside traditional European ties. The Senegal–UAE connection could redefine West Africa’s role in Middle East trade, potentially attracting wider Gulf investments into African infrastructure and logistics.
