What’s the Status of Ranveer Singh’s ‘Don 3’? Shankar Mahadevan Spills the Tea!

With Bollywood increasingly banking on the power of cinematic universes and nostalgic franchises, Don 3 remains one of the most talked-about upcoming projects. Announced in 2023 with Ranveer Singh stepping into the iconic role, once helmed by Shah Rukh Khan and originally by Amitabh Bachchan, the expectations are sky-high. However, the silence from the production team since the initial announcement has left fans anxious and speculating.

Enter Shankar Mahadevan — the celebrated singer-composer and one-third of the acclaimed trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who scored the music for the earlier Don films. In a recent exclusive interview with Zoom, Shankar offered a small but telling update. When asked about the current status of Don 3 and whether music composition had begun, he candidly shared, “We haven’t started the music setting yet. Hopefully, they (the makers) will be setting soon.”

While it might not be the progress fans were hoping for, this comment confirms that the film is still in its planning phase. It also subtly affirms that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy will likely return for the soundtrack — a welcome relief for fans who value musical continuity in long-standing franchises.

This statement raises a few questions — is the delay a result of creative recalibration, a scheduling issue with Ranveer Singh or Farhan Akhtar, or something else altogether? Given Farhan’s reputation for being meticulous and having recently taken more time between directorial ventures, it’s possible Don 3 is undergoing major script or production design enhancements behind the scenes.

While the wait continues, one thing is clear: Don 3 isn’t shelved — it's just simmering on a slow burner. With Ranveer Singh’s dynamism, Farhan Akhtar’s direction, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s musical genius in the pipeline, the third installment promises to be nothing short of a spectacle — whenever it finally arrives.

So for now, fans must do what Bollywood audiences do best: wait, rewatch the classics, and trust the process. After all, "Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai" — and apparently, so is rushing the next chapter.
