Mass Layoffs Begin in Education Department as Trump Plans Closure
Mass layoffs have begun in the Education Department as part of President Trump’s plan to close the agency. Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed on Fox News that Trump has directed her to shut down the department. On Tuesday, the department laid off 1,315 staff members. Nearly half of its workforce has been cut, leaving only about 2,183 employees.
McMahon said these cuts aim to remove unnecessary bureaucracy and save money. She explained that this is just the first step in a long process to make the department leaner and more efficient. Importantly, the layoffs will not affect key services. Programs like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, student support, services for students with disabilities, civil rights investigations, and state funding will continue without interruption. McMahon stressed that the right people have been kept to manage these essential tasks.

Staff were asked to leave their offices by 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the offices will be closed on Wednesday for security reasons. In a memo sent out after her confirmation, McMahon warned workers about the upcoming layoffs. She said that cutting red tape and unnecessary jobs will help parents make better educational choices for their children.
Although McMahon said that the government is not ending education, President Trump may soon order the department to close completely. Many education supporters are upset and are planning to fight the decision through legal action and protests.
