Putin and Modi Accord Ahead of BRICS Summit

Vladimir Putin said the BRICS block had "added further strength" as Vladimir Putin sought to present growth in the BRICS group by referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "good friend" ahead of a BRICS summit scheduled in Kazan between October 22-23. The summit is an important moment for the bloc that has expanded from five members to ten. Putin has already noted that BRICS is responsible for 24% of the world's GDP and 41% of the population, thus declaring that the growth of the block will come not in its favor but in the favor of the world community in general.

However, Putin appreciated Modi's consistent advocacy for dialogue over the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He insists that Russia remains open to negotiations but would not meet the terms as dictated by Ukraine after walking out from previous discussions. This renders India's role in helping to facilitate a discussion to a peaceful resolution all the more crucial.

He showed keen interest in hosting Indian films in the Russian lands, who would understand phenomenal growth of popularity of Indian cinema. This cultural collaboration is a reflection of deepening ties between the two nations, where bonding goes beyond simple politics to a people-to-people connection.

As BRICS develops further, the discussion between Putin and Modi indicates a strengthening partnership and an evolving global dynamics that can reshape the world order. The summit in the latter half of the year will have to tackle this theme, amid an effort to revive cooperation among nations outside the Western sphere in a fast-deteriorating world. Such collaborative spirit is imperative while BRICS tries to redefine its role in the world.
