New: EU AI Regulation Agreement Redefines Tech Governance

The European Union (EU) has struck a historic agreement on the world’s first regulations governing artificial intelligence (AI). This historic agreement, reached after a marathon 37-hour negotiation between the European Parliament and EU member states, marks a watershed moment in global AI regulation.

Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner in charge of this regulatory framework, aptly described the agreement as “historic.” Beyond AI, this groundbreaking agreement extends its reach to govern social media and search engines, casting a regulatory net that includes tech titans like X, TikTok, and Google.

Breton stated that a whopping 100 people worked tirelessly for over three days to finalize this historic arrangement. He highlighted that the outcome was well worth the few hours of lost sleep, emphasizing the agreement’s historical significance.

Carme Artigas, Spain’s secretary of state for AI, was instrumental in initiating these talks. There have been reports of strong support from France and Germany, demonstrating a collaborative effort to balance tough regulation with encouraging innovation, particularly among smaller businesses.
