Focus: India Spearheading a Revolutionary Move Towards AI Infrastructure

 

Inspired by the successes of previous digital public infrastructure (DPI) projects, India envisions developing a domestic AI architecture. According to media reports, India intends to build an indigenous sovereign AI infrastructure in line with its commitment to massive DPI programs.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics, stated, “We are determined to have our own AI.” There are two options available to us. One option is to embrace an AI ecosystem in India led by Google, Meta, Indian entrepreneurs, and domestic enterprises. However, we believe that this falls short.” Chandrasekhar expressed similar comments at a recent gathering.

According to media reports, India draws inspiration for its distinct approach from techniques used by the United States and Europe. The Indian government intends to employ this technology to create use cases that promote social and economic advancement.

During his recent visit to India, IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna stated, “I staunchly believe every nation should possess sovereign AI capabilities, encompassing extensive language models for AI.”

India has already begun to take steps in this direction. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology published a draft of the National Data Governance Framework Policy, which advocates for the creation of a datasets platform to house non-personal and anonymized datasets collected by central government agencies from Indian residents.
