China Earthquake: Death Toll Rises To 131; See Details

 

On Monday, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck Jishishan County in the People’s Republic of China, near the boundary of Gansu and Qinghai provinces. The earthquake devastated the country. More than 150,000 dwellings were destroyed. It also produced mudslides and destroyed power lines and other local infrastructure in northwest China.

Almost 1,000 individuals have been injured as a result of the earthquake. The earthquake also claimed several lives. Thousands of rescue workers have been working in subzero weather to help individuals.

On Wednesday morning, Chinese authorities announced that the official death toll in Gansu, a province in north-central China, had risen to 131, with 782 injured, and 18 dead and 198 injured in Qinghai, a sparsely populated Chinese province.

Sixteen persons have yet to be found. The death toll may rise more in the coming days. The Chinese government stated that they will now focus on treating the injured and assisting those who had lost their houses as a result of the devastating earthquake.

Around 20 individuals are still missing from two villages in China’s Minhe county.
