UAE and US Discuss Opportunities to Accelerate Climate Action Before COP28

The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, often known as COP28, will take place from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The annual event will bring the world together at a critical juncture in climate action.

Dr Sultan Al Jaber complimented the US and China on their substantial declaration on November 15 on tripling renewable capacity, reducing power sector emissions, and prioritizing urgent action on methane emissions in the run-up to the Summit.

The COP28 President-Designate, who is also the UAE’s Minister for Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change, as well as the Chairman of Masdar and Group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, emphasized the importance of “restoring trust in multilateralism.”

Al Jaber met with US climate envoy John Kerry at the White House in early March to examine potential for increasing climate ambition and expediting climate action ahead of the Summit. The discussions centered on releasing greater climate funds to preserve the environment.

Both parties acknowledged the US-UAE Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy while agreed to keep in touch on a regular basis in order to contribute to a successful COP28 and a well-managed energy transition that offers greater climate action as well as energy security and affordability.
