Eras Tour In Brazil: Swifties Face Deaths, Muggings, Heatwave And Postponement

The three-day Rio de Janeiro leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which wrapped Monday night, enraged and disappointed a large number of Brazilian fans. People reported passing out due to the intense heat, being mugged, or being caught up in a police raid.

Fans waited for hours outside the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium before the first concert on Friday, when temperatures reached 41 degrees Celsius. Swifties complained about the intense heat inside the venue, and others stated they couldn’t get to water.

Despite the harsh weather, concertgoers complained that they were not permitted to bring water into the stadium. As temperatures rose further on Saturday, federal officials declared that free water would soon be offered at concerts and other large events.

Ana Clara Benevides Machado, 23, took ill during the event and died later that evening at a hospital, exacerbating the rage and turmoil. The Rio Municipal Health Department stated that she died from cardiorespiratory arrest, but the specific reason of her death is unknown.

Fans and politicians were outraged by her death. Taylor Swift said Benevides’ death devastated her with a “shattered heart” in an Instagram statement. The global pop sensation canceled her Saturday gig due to the excessive heat in Rio.
