Earthshot Prize 2023: Prince William Strikes An Optimistic Tone In Singapore
The Prince of Wales unveiled the five winners of his annual Earthshot Prize on Tuesday at a ceremony in Singapore, with each receiving $1.2 million to develop their concept. The 15 finalists were chosen from over 1,300 candidates.
The repercussions of the climate emergency have become “too visible to ignore,” Prince William said during his statement at the celebration, adding, “The last year has been one of great change and even greater challenge… However, as we have seen tonight, hope does remain.”
The ceremony was co-hosted by actress Hannah Waddingham and actor and producer Sterling K Brown, with attendees including Hollywood icon Cate Blanchett and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. OneRepublic and Bastille also gave performances.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, was unable to attend because she stayed behind to assist her son George with his “first set of major exams.” The Earthshot Prize is named after John F. Kennedy’s 1960s “Moonshot” desire to land a man on the moon.
