UK Govt to Justify its Rwanda Migrant Plan to Top Court

This week, the UK Supreme Court will hear Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-led government’s justification to deport illegal migrants and asylum seekers to Rwanda. The Court of Appeal ruled in June that Rwanda was not a safe third country.

It said those sent to Rwanda would be at risk of being sent home where their lives could be endangered or faced with persecution despite a legitimate asylum case or claim. The Court of Appeal judges said it would make the policy unlawful under Britain’s Human Rights Act.

But the government wants to overturn the June ruling and push ahead with its vow to “stop the boats”. Suella Braverman, UK Home Secretary, says the government will do whatever it takes if its plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is thwarted in Strasbourg.

She said the government would be prepared to pull out of the convention that governs the Strasbourg court if it blocked the Rwanda policy.
