G20 summit: US says China should not 'play spoiler' at meet

 

Jake Sullivan, United States national security advisor to President Joe Biden, has urged People’s Republic of China to set aside its issues with the Republic of India and must not ‘play the role of a spoiler’ during the G20 summit.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan urged China to play a "constructive role" in the upcoming G20 summit. He further said it was up to China if it "wanted to play the role of a spoiler.”

Recently, China said that Xi Jinping, the President of the People's Republic of China, would not attend the G20 meeting in India. Li Qiang, the Premier of the People's Republic of China, will lead the Chinese delegation to the G20 summit in India. 

Xi's absence drew criticism from US officials. Sullivan’s remarks came after China confirmed that the Chinese president would not attend the meeting.

India is hosting the G20 (Group of 20) summit in the capital Delhi on 9 and 10 September. Various world leaders will attend the summit. US President Joe Biden will travel to India on September 7 to attend the meeting. He will also hold meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Biden is set to discuss various global issues. Chinese Premier Li Qiang will also attend the meeting. China has not given specific reasons behind Xi's absence at the summit.

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia; Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada; German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol, French President Emmanuel Macron, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez, and Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu are set to attend the G20 summit. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman might also attend the summit. However, an official confirmation from the Kingdom is still awaited. President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, and President of the European Council, Charles Michel, are yet to confirm their attendance at the summit. 

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the upcoming G20 summit. Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the G20 summit. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador might not attend the summit.
