Ali Karti: US Sanctions Entities And Individual Exacerbating Sudan's Conflict
The United States imposed sanctions on an ousted Sudanese minister and two companies tied to the African country’s paramilitary force that is locked in monthlong fighting with the Sudanese army.
These are the latest attempts by the US to hold Islamist militants accountable for the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that broke out in April over plans for a political transition and integration of the RSF into the army.
Since the Sudanese people ousted Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, various actors have taken steps to undermine the country’s efforts to establish civilian, democratic governance.
The Treasury said it targeted Ali Karti, the Minister of Foreign Affairs under Bashir, for exacerbating instability in Sudan as fighting has killed thousands and displaced millions.
After a military coup in 2021 involving RSF, Karti’s Islamist party has reestablished some of its power.
