Peak emissions as China & Europe ramp up output aspirations will be tested: Maguire
Renewable sources are producing a record 12% of the world’s electricity in 2022, according to research by Ember.
This increase in renewable energy supply capacity may contribute to slowly falling fossil fuel emissions. However, despite this progress, electricity emissions may worsen this year due to the coordinated recovery of the economies in China and Europe.
Ember's statistics show that China and Europe increased fossil fuel power emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to a record 5.99 billion tonnes in 2022. As factories and production lines ramp up output from the low levels of the previous year, energy consumption is expected to increase, and it may become challenging for power producers in China and Europe to expand electricity generating levels without turning to more coal due to the unstable natural gas markets.
This might cause emissions to increase further and dash future predictions of declining levels of pollution from fossil fuels.
